5-element backscatter calibration sample with Faraday cup

Backscatter Electron Detector calibration standard with 5 materials C, Si, Ge, Nb, and Au mounted and polished in a high purity aluminum 12.5 mm pin stub. In the center of the stub is a 200 µm copper aperture to serve as Cu/Al reference, as well as a Faraday cup.

The pure elements in this standard are selected to be evenly spaced in the periodic table. This makes it easy to draw a backscatter coefficient curve through the 5 resulting grey levels and get the full BSD response characteristic. based on this you can predict average atomic number of materials based on the BSD signal. This BSD calibration standard is often used for GSR software.
